  • Pavel Kopecký, Jan Tywoniak: Advanced Simulation of Earth-to-Air Heat Exchangers - a comparison between simulation and measured data

The paper deals with the earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHX) simulation and monitoring. A newly developed hygro-thermal model for transient simulation of EAHXs has already been validated against an analytical solution; a comparison with performance data of real size EAHXs has missed so far. The model is tested against long-term monitoring of two simple EAHXs connected with mechanical ventilation in two low-energy family houses. In parallel, the differential sensitivity analysis is used for a model assessment. The comparison between measured data and numerical simulation does not correlate absolutely. However, the simulation is capable to show limitations and energy saving potential of the exchanger with respect to building ventilation. The model brings clear information about processes which take place during EAHX operation.

Pasivní dům v Rychnově u Jablonce nad Nisou je monitorován od září 2005. Měření bylo navrženo s ohledem na podrobné sledování provozu mechanického větrání s rekuperací a předřazeným zemním výměníkem tepla a sledování kvality vnitřního prostředí v domě. Příspěvek se zabývá vyhodnocením některých měřených dat za rok 2006.

  • Pavel Kopecký: Hygro-thermal performance of earth-to-air heat exchanger: long-term data evaluation and short-term simulation

The thermal comfort requirements and cooling energy demand have significantly increased during the last twenty years. Air heating and/or cooling in an earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHX) is a possible approach for improvement of thermal comfort in a building and for reduction of ventilation heat loss. A passive family house using mechanical ventilation system equipped with heat recovery and simple EAHX is being monitored since the end of summer 2005. The paper deals with the evaluation of measured data collected during year 2006. Amongst others, the results show the tendencies in moisture performance of monitored EAHX. Besides pure data evaluation, the short-term hygro-thermal simulation of EAHX was performed with a numerical model specially developed for this purpose. The simulation is compared with the monitored data; the comparison serves as the basic experimental validation of the model.

Pasivní dům v Rychnově u Jablonce nad Nisou je monitorován od září 2005. Příspěvek se zabývá vyhodnocením některých měřených dat za rok 2006. Výsledky ukazují na některé tendence ve vlhkostním chování monitorovaného zemního výměníku tepla. Mimo pouhé vyhodnocení měřených dat je provedena krátkodobá tepelně-vlhkostní simulace provozu zemního výměníku tepla. Výsledky simulace jsou porovnány s měřením. Toto porovnání slouží jako základní experimentální validace použitého numerického modelu.

English overview: A passive family house using mechanical ventilation system equipped with heat recovery and a simple earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHX) is being monitored since the end of summer 2005. The paper deals with the evaluation of measured data collected during year 2006. Amongst others, the results show the tendencies in moisture performance of monitored EAHX. Besides pure data evaluation, the short-term hygrothermal simulation of EAHX was performed with a numerical model specially developed for this purpose. The simulation is compared with the monitored data; the comparison
serves as the basic experimental validation of the model.
The extensive long-term monitoring introduced in this paper and numerical simulation in particular bring information about processes taking place during EAHX operation. The monitoring is detailed enough for a robust experimental validation of the developed EAHX model. Despite relatively good accuracy of the numerical simulation achieved in the example of simulation, the accurate simulation of EAHX should be considered as rather difficult because of low air-to-soil heat flow, the intermittent pattern of EAHX operation, and moisture flow in the pipes.
The condensation inside the pipes can not be eliminated completely in climate of middle Europe. Therefore, the question of mould growth inside pipes should remain open, although the several existing studies have not confirmed any hygienic problems.
